How long are the lessons and classes?
Most students take 60 minutes lessons on a weekly basis. Although it is possible to take longer or shorter lessons, we feel that 60 minutes allow plenty of time for warm-up, pieces-study, understanding the basics of harmony and theory and preparation for the various parts of ABRSM exams. It also gives the teacher enough time to explain and write down the homework which is an essential part of progressing.
For children under five years we recommend starting with 30 minutes every week as this works best with early learners.
What is the right age to start private lessons?
Adults and children can start taking lessons at any time. For children, starting private lessons at the right time is the key element to the success of their progress. We offer Music Appreciation classes for children under five years which are designed to develop their natural musical ability. This includes learning about pitch, rhythm and pulse through song, games and fun.
Do I need to own my own instrument or can I rent one?
As your lessons will be conducted in your own home, you will need to have your own instrument available for lessons. However we can advise on the best instrument for your needs and the optimum outlets through which to buy or rent.
For our piano students we recommend the minimum of an eighty-eight weighted keyboard, e.g. Yamaha 'Clavinova' or the Roland range of electric pianos.
Ultimately the electric piano options do not compete with a real upright or grand piano.
How do I pay for the lessons?
Our payment policy requires a minimum of one month in advance to be paid by electronic transfer.
Is it possible to have lessons during school holidays?
Yes. Our teachers are happy to continue lessons during all school holidays although individual schedules may vary during these periods.
Can I take lessons with one of my friends or siblings?
Private lessons work best when taken individually. Even if the students are both the same age and level, they will most likely learn at different rates. The job of our teachers is to customise a lesson solely to fit the needs of an individual student. Therefore we recommend siblings or friends taking lessons consecutively.
Can I take a lesson every other week?
We consider two weeks is generally too long for students to remember everything their teacher showed them in the last lesson, therefore we recommend weekly lessons for students whenever possible.
Can I watch my child’s lesson?
Yes. We welcome parents to join their children during lesson time, especially for very young students.
Is there a minimum number of lessons that I have to take?
We recommend that new students take at least 12 lessons over a three month period. By the end of this term initial progress should become evident.
Please keep in mind that we require 30 days notice of cancellation should the student wish to terminate the lessons.
